leather bustier

so my boyfriend and i are making our second set of leather armor. we are not in the SCA ,so we are not following any rules, just trying to make something visually appealing. he also likes to make sure his is functional- because you never know when i might lose it and start hacking at him with my axe.
we are making me a leather bustier type thing and in order to avoid pointy boob sections (if we make a cone for each one) we are using a few curved sections and stitching them together. i really dont want some massive cones sticking out in front of me, poking people in the back. he, of course, wanted to put spikes right where the points would be. in any case, the body of the piece is composed to 3 separate pieces- the front (with attached boobs), and 2 back pieces that lace up in the center and also connect to the front.

anyways, due to some medication changes, i'm probably going to lose a little weight before i actually am going to wear the armor. we're already going to have to make it shorter, as when we wet it and i put it on, it stretched quite a bit and was super comfortable, instead of being a squish-oh god i cant breathe type of thing that i am used to.
my question is, should i bake it? we molded it, but it is not hard.. i am unsure about if i want it hard or not. if i am wearing it next to my skin and i'm sweating like crazy, will it suddenly lose it's shape and leave me hanging, so to speak?

thanks for your help
Cassandra

I just bought my first helm. It's made out of mild steel and showing some signs of discoloration rust (that wasn't there when I got it....happened since then). What would be the best way to get rid of this and to prevent it from happening in the future? Is there some sort of sealant that can be put on to help?

Thanks,

Touring the Tower

A tour group stopped at the Tower of London, and were given the chance to try out some of the ancient armour. Two men - one from Prague and another from Athens took up the opportunity. One donned a slightly damaged suit of plate armor and the other chain-mail, while the rest of the group crowded around. But in the full suits, the onlookers couldn't tell one from the other. "Is that the Czech wearing the plate armour?" asked one tourist. "No," replied another, "The Greek has the broken plate, and the Czech is in the mail."

Roman Rollers

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the famous Emperor Nero instituted a new game. The players would take those little disks you set your glass on in order to protect the furniture, and see who could get the most distance rolling them across the floor. They were the first roller coasters. Back in those days, the disks were made of iron, and they would bet on whose disk would roll the farthest. They called them ferrous wheels.

The Angry King

Once, long ago, a king summoned all his provincial rulers to his castle. He was in a rather belligerent mood, and wanted to scare them into giving him extra taxes. Unknown to him, they met in secret on the way, and decided that they should agree to pay the extra, but they would at first pretend to refuse, so they could try to bargain down the actual amount extra they would have to pay.

They arrived at the king's castle, and gathered in the audience chamber. The king made his demands, and as agreed, they started to refuse. Unfortunately, they hadn't realized just how belligerent the king's mood was: as soon as they started to refuse, he got angry, and ordered his guards to kill them on the spot.

More than half of them were slain before they even realized what was happening, and the others had to do some very quick groveling to survive. After everything had settled down, those who remained explained to the king their plan, and the king was filled with remorse for his hasty actions.

The moral of the story?
- Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

The King's Pizza

One day (just before Christmas, probably), Good King Wenceslas decided that he was fed up with the food at the palace, so he phoned up his local Italian restaurant for a takeaway pizza. "Certainly, your Majesty" says the Manager, "Would you like your usual"? "Yes please," replied the King, "same as always - deep pan, crisp and even"

Happy April Fools Day!

Just curious if anyone here has by chance worked with our Wonderflex thermoplastic material in the making of armor. I helped develop this material years ago from the manufacturing and industrial side of things along with Fosshape, another heat activated product, then intoduced them to Dazian Fabrics www.dazian.com

Heres a finished example of Wonderflex made armor in this link....

So,

My final days in Texas with Patrick Thaden were a mad rush to get this project done:

http://www.flickr.com/gp/7220422@N07/GQL7i8

I am now back in LA (El Segundo, to be precise), and I still have a project to finish up but I have no shop.

Is there anyone near or around El Segundo (90245) that has shop space they would be willing to rent to me so I can finish up this last black and white suit of armour?

http://www.flickr.com/gp/7220422@N07/0CCVv8

(It's curently further along than is shown in these pictures)

The Armorer’s Song

1467. The Armorer’s Song

By Harry Bache Smith

LET hammer on anvil ring,
And the forge fire brightly shine;
Let wars rage still,
While I work with a will
At this peaceful trade of mine.
The sword is a weapon to conquer fields;
I honor the man who shakes it:
But naught is the lad who the broad-sword wields
Compared to the lad who makes it.

Clang! Clang! Clang!
Then huzzah for the anvil, the forge, and the sledge!
Huzzah for the sparks that fly!
If I had a cup I would straightway pledge
The armorer—that is I!

Let others of glory sing,
As they struggle in glory’s quest.
Let them wave their brands
In their mailëd hands,
While the sword smites shield and crest.
Oh, war is a trade I have not essayed,
Though goodliest frame attends it.
I sing of the one who, when fight is done,
Takes every good sword and mends it.

Clang! Clang! Clang!
Then huzzah for the valiant, the squire, or the knight,
Who loveth the battle-cry!
But here ’s to the swordsman that maketh them fight,
The armorer—that is I!

Cleveland Armor Exhibit

Witness the art of Renaissance warfare as CMA presents Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria
Released Dec 13, 2007

CLEVELAND (December 7, 2007) — The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) presents a varied selection of some of the finest surviving examples of European arms and armor with the arrival of Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria on view February 24, 2008 – June 1, 2008 at CMA. This exhibition is the Museum’s first to look at a slice of history in Europe at the height of the Renaissance through the subject of arms and armor and its role in a rural society on the border of the Ottoman Empire.

Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria, curated by CMA’s curator of medieval art, Stephen N. Fliegel, focuses upon the history of the Austrian state of Styria between 1500 and 1650 when it was under threat from the advancing Ottoman Turks. At the heart of the story is a broad selection of loans from the collection of the Landeszeughaus (regional armory) in Graz, the capital of Styria. This armory, still intact, was one of a series of armories established by the early Habsburg Family in the 16th century throughout Central Europe for defensive purposes against the Turkish expansion. At its height, the armory housed 180,000 pieces; today it contains 30,000 pieces including some of the finest surviving examples of arms and armor in Europe. The exhibition, presenting more than 200 works, will additionally examine the role of arms and armor in a historical context, both as highly-decorated art objects, and as functional weaponry or protection for its wearer. Other aspects of the history of the period explored are warfare, tournaments, and armor as fashion.

Period Natural Varnish

I am working on a new shield and I want to make it in a fully period manner. I have used hide glue to assemble the 3/16" planks of of oak 3 layers deep. Now it is time to put on the linen surface with varnish. I am trying to make a natural period varnish using Terpintine, linseed/nut oil and pine resin but I can't seem to get the mix right. Does anyone have a recipe for a natural varnish.

Eight months ago, I sold what I could of my personal belongings, packed up the rest and moved out to Texas to manage the armour department of Thaden Ironworks.

http://thadenarmory.com/

In that time, I have managed to make some fairly cool things:

http://www.flickr.com/gp/7220422@N07/78qdG8

...but what was supposed to have been a lucaritive venture, turned out to be a considerable loss.

As fate would have it, the company has been bought out and the armour portion disolved.

As of December 1, I am left with no job, no place to live (part of the original negotiation), and I have not yet figured out where to go.

Even though I lack a formal education, I have been an educator. I have managed crews to a common greatness. However, through it all, I have been an artist. In fact, I have been an artist for so long now, I don't know how to work the mundane.

I thought of looking into colleges with metals programs, but so far I have had very little luck. I can't afford to open up my own shop.

I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out where to go with over twenty years of creative experience, but I think I'm too close to the problem to see it clearly.

That's why I would like to enlist your aid.

Give me ideas, suggestions, clues, anything.

Help me to get my brain thinking in the right direction.

I don't want to end up stuck in a job that does not capitalize on my need to make.

Has anyone worked with this stuff?
I have 6 sheets of 12"x12" and I want to make gauntlets and elbow cops from it.

How well does it form under the hammer? I am use to steel. Are there things I should watch out for like radius on angles and cracking? How do you anneal 6061 aluminium?

Winter is here and fighting is over. Now it is time to get productive and make that new armor I have been planning all year.

Anyone here use an arbor press?

I was wondering if a 1 ton arbor press would be able to cut 18 guage stainless steel if I made custom dies. I am making a new scale harness and I am looking for an easy way to cut and punch the plates.

The fiancee will not let me get the 20 ton model.

Does anyone know where one might procure charcoal wrought iron (in sheets preferably)?

for those who don't know, charcoal wrought iron is the form of iron used everywhere before steel was invented and before industrial methods were discovered for refining iron out of iron ore. it's what medieval suits of armor were made out of and does not rust like mild steel. it also takes shapes with much less effort on the hammering end of things. perhaps if you know of some blacksmiths who i might talk to, that would be useful too.

Hey everyone,

In the past year I seem to have just been having the worst of luck. Today when I was going to get my brakes fixed because they were starting to grind, someone ran a red light and hit me before taking off.

And because of that I have to sell my stuff again. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

--One set of Van Sussen elbow size med-large. I was going to use these for hidden knees but haven't gotten around to adding them to the knee and shin guards I have.

$20 plus shipping

--One set of hardened leather and splinted greaves from Torvaldr.

$60 plus shipping

--300 lamellar plates from Felix. I was working on them last night but only got about 1 and 1/2 rows done.

$165 plus shipping

--One large valsgarde 6 helm kit in 12 gage. I was attempting to crease the ridge top but haven't been able to get to it.

$75 plus shipping

--One set of hard leather bazubands tooled by Torvaldr.

$100 plus shipping

Patrick Thaden…

http://www.thadenarmory.com/

…recently flew me out to Texas to make some armour with him.

These are some shots of a bascinet we completed during my stay.

http://new.photos.yahoo.com/tyrantatheart/album/576460762388746473

The client wanted something styled after the Choburg bascinet, as well as four different exchange visors. Everything is made of 1050 spring steel. The bascinet was raised from a welded cone, as were the two pig nose visors. The perforated visor was raised from a flat sheet with no welds. A bar grill was also made, but not pictured.

Working with Patrick was a blast and I hope to head back out there some time in April to make more pretty things.

I'm contemplating getting into making some leather armor and think I want to involve some leather scale in it. Question is, does anyone have advice on the mass production of uniform scales?

AmIPeriodOrNot is back!
Perhaps some of you remember AmIPeriodOrNot.com. It was based on AmIHotOrNot.com: people would upload pics of their garb or armor and anyone could vote and make comments if desired. It went down a few years ago, but it's back now under new management (and a larger staff)!

Come on over and either show off your stuff or take a look around and vote. Some of it is breath-taking but so far, armor is completely underrepresented

Here are some pics of a few of my leather armour for your opinions
The red suit was made for a patron at bristol renn faire, and the black suit was made specificly for SCA heavy. Yes, I know it doesn't fit the wearer quite right, it was a commision that canceled so I gifted it to Micheal as he is at the crossover point in Caid youth combat

Anyone else interested in this? I've been playing with it for the last 6 months or so, just making bits of heavy duty blokes jewelry and the like, not started on any real pieces of armour though.

I would like to get my hands on a pattern for making maille gloves if anyone has one and is kind enough to throw it my way.

I have played with making my own links but at the moment I mostly use spring washers for sheer ease of use.

Which ones (when you find them on plate) are being used and if they are the solid steel can you pound them in using the same method as copper? ....Or am I missing something here? Anybody? Oh and if it takes a special tool, or you have to heat them can you post info re that as well?

I've been thinking about ordering some armour for fighting in from a professional for a while now. However, I would like to order from someone nearby who can actually fit pieces properly in person. If anyone has advice on an armoury please let me know. (or if you have a reason why i should trust someone who lives far away that works too).

I'm working on my own suit, just for the learning of it all, but I don't have the tools or the skill to make full plates instead of my current lorica segmenta offshoot style.

I am a Eberhauer Landsknecht from the Kingdom of Atenveldt. I am very new to Tribe, and since I have been here, I have found a great meny tribes to join. I am amused by some of them and amazed at others. The SCA has been called my home for about 9 years now. My first Estrella war was Estrella war 12. Every year it gets bigger and better, and every year we get stronger and more structured as a Hardsute Fighting Unit. My name is Lord Wilhelm Gebauer von Stadt Konigsberg. I thank you for letting me join your tribe, and I hope I can make some new friends here. I have found my home in the SCA Tribes. Until we cross paths at war, Blesseed be and Hail Landsknecht!
